Payne and Hefner Named Best Lawyers, Hefner Named Super Lawyer for 2017

ELG attorneys Jim Payne and Bill Hefner have again been chosen by their peers for inclusion on the list of The Best Lawyers in America® for 2017.  First published in 1983, Best Lawyers employs an exhaustive annual peer-review survey of more than 50,000 attorneys who vote on the legal abilities of other lawyers practicing in the same and related specialties in their geographical area. Jim and Bill are grateful to be selected by their peers in the Minnesota environmental bar for these honors.

Bill also has been selected for inclusion in the 2017 list of Minnesota Super Lawyers.  Super Lawyers, a Thomson Reuters business, is a rating service of attorneys from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The annual selections are made using a multiphase process that includes a statewide survey of lawyers, an independent research evaluation of candidates and peer reviews by practice area. The Minnesota Super Lawyers list is published online and locally in Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine, Twin Cities Business and the Minnesota version of Super Lawyers Magazine.

Greenhouse to Write Monthly Environmental Law Column in State Bar Magazine

ELG attorney Jeremy Greenhouse will be writing a monthly environmental law column for the Minnesota State Bar Association‘s official magazine, Bench & Bar, beginning in September 2017.The column will summarize key state and national legal developments in the areas of environmental, energy, and natural resources law.

Bill Hefner Named Director of A&WMA – UMS Board

Members of the Air & Waste Management Association – Upper Midwest Section have elected ELG attorney Bill Hefner as a Director of the Board of the A&WMA-UMS.  Bill—who replaces outgoing ELG attorney Jon Bloomberg on the Board—will serve a three-year term beginning June 2017.  The mission of A&WMA is to assist in the professional development and critical environmental decision-making of its members to benefit society and its core purpose is to improve environmental knowledge and decisions by providing a neutral forum for exchanging information.


For over 35 years, the Upper Midwest Section (UMS) of the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA) has provided a forum for Association members who live in Minnesota, Western Wisconsin, and the Dakotas to meet, learn, and network. 

Jon Bloomberg and Bill Hefner to Present Webinar on Administrative Law for Environmental Professionals

ELG attorneys Jon Bloomberg and Bill Hefner will be presenting a two-hour national webinar for the Air and Waste Management Association on Wednesday, July 19, 2017.  The webinar—entitled “Administrative Law for Environmental Professionals”—will address such topics as the legal basis of regulations, the difference between rules and guidance, and key considerations in managing compliance risk.  Registration and additional information about the webinar can be found here.

Susan Wiens receives MSBA’s 2017 Professional Excellence Award.

ELG attorney Susan Wiens receives MSBA’s Professional Excellence Award, along with Ken White, for their service and leadership as Co-Chairs of the Alternative Legal Models Task Force The Task Force investigated and proposed to the MSBA Assembly innovative means to provide legal services to those that cannot otherwise afford legal services or qualify for legal aid.  This honor recognizes attorneys who strive to meet the many responsibilities of a lawyer, including efforts to improve the administration of justice, the practice of law, and access to justice for the benefit of the community.

Jon Bloomberg to Speak on the Changing Federal-State Relationship Regarding Environmental Regulation

ELG attorney Jon Bloomberg will participate in a panel discussing current information on U.S. and Minnesota energy, climate, and regulatory priorities given the changing federal-state relationship.  The discussion, which is being presented by Environmental Initiative, will involve representatives from federal and state governments, academia, non-profit organizations, tribal leaders and private companies providing their perspectives on this important topic.  Registration and other information can be found here.

ELG was once again proud to be a Presenting Sponsor at the Environmental Initiative’s Annual Awards ceremony on May 25, 2017.  Each year, the Awards honor innovative projects that have achieved “extraordinary environmental results by harnessing the power of partnerships.”  Seven individuals or groups received awards for their work, while the Environmental Initiative celebrated its own 25th anniversary of bringing together nonprofit, business and government leaders to solve environmental problems.

Bill Hefner Recognized as 2016 MSBA North Star Lawyer

Bill Hefner has been named a 2016 “North Star Lawyer by the Minnesota State Bar Association.  Each year, the MSBA recognizes members who have provided 50 hours or more of pro bono legal services.  Bill provided free legal services last year to two different juvenile clients as a volunteer attorney for the Children’s Law Center of Minnesota.  Staff and volunteer attorneys for the Children’s Law Center provide legal representation to children who are either wards of the state – “legal orphans” – or have been removed from their homes because they need protection. CLC also represents foster children who request help. Bill has been a volunteer CLC attorney since 2004.
