Bill Hefner advises clients in all major aspects of environmental law, including air, water, environmental review and remediation. Bill was a Minnesota Assistant Attorney General from 1995 through 1999. During that time, he advised and represented the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency in a variety of enforcement, regulatory compliance, permitting and rulemaking matters involving various federal and state environmental laws. He joined the Minneapolis law firm of Greene Espel, PLLP, in 1999, where he became a partner in 2002. While at Greene Espel, Bill defended corporate, municipal and individual clients in environmental and land use litigation and enforcement proceedings at the federal, state and local levels.
Bill has been named to the list of Best Lawyers in America every year since 2013 and was named Best Lawyers’ 2016 Environmental Law “Lawyer of the Year” for Minneapolis. He also was named a Super Lawyer in 2004, 2008, 2015 and 2016, and holds an AV® Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell. Bill is a past Chair of the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Environmental, Natural Resources and Energy Law Section, and was a member of the Section’s Governing Council from 2000 through 2009. He is a frequent lecturer on current environmental issues and for ten years wrote the “Environmental Law Update” for the MSBA’s Bench and Bar magazine. Bill served as an adjunct professor of Environmental Law at Hamline Law School from 2011 through 2013. In June 2014, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton appointed Bill to the Minnesota Petroleum Tank Release Compensation Board.
Bill received his Juris Doctor, with special honors, from the University of Iowa College of Law and his Master of Arts in Urban and Regional Planning from the University’s Graduate College in 1995. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree, also with special honors and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Iowa in 1991.
