On May 21, 2015, ELG partner Jon Bloomberg, as the Chairman of the Environmental Initiative, welcomed approximately 470 attendees to the 21st Annual Environmental Initiative Awards. ELG was a major Presenting Sponsor at this year’s Awards. As the Environmental Initiative states on its website, the Awards were established to “honor innovative projects that have achieved extraordinary environmental results by harnessing the power of partnerships.” Jon has been a major sponsor of the Awards, and has been associated with the Environmental Initiative since its inception, because he believes the concept of partnering inspires organizations to create projects similar to those being honored at the Awards and encourages collaborative approaches to environmental problem solving. This year, 18 finalist projects were highlighted at the Awards.

Ken Podpeskar Elected to MSBA ENRE Council

ELG partner Ken Podpeskar has been elected by his peers in the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Environmental, Natural Resources and Energy Section to serve as a member of the Section’s Governing Council.

The ENRE Section’s purpose is to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas among Minnesota lawyers active in the practice of environmental, natural resources, and energy law, and to educate members of the Section with respect to current issues in those areas.  The Section’s Governing Council is responsible for developing and implementing the Section’s various educational offerings, internship programs, and initiatives.    Ken’s three-year term as a Council member will begin in September 2015.

Bill Hefner to Present at 11th Annual Minnesota Environmental Institute

Bill Hefner will be part of a panel presenting on the topic “Getting to Yes: Working with Federal and State Regulators” at the 11th Annual Minnesota Environmental Institute on Thursday, April 23, 2015.  Bill will be joined on the panel by Kathleen Winters, General Counsel of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and Robert Kaplan, Deputy Regional Administrator, EPA Region V.  The panelists will discuss working with government regulators in permitting, rulemaking and enforcement proceedings.  Registration information for this event can be found here.

Jim Payne Receives 2015 MSBA Distinguished Service Award

The Environmental, Natural Resources and Energy Law Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association chose Jim Payne to be this year’s recipient of the Eldon G. Kaul Distinguished Service Award.  The Distinguished Service Award is given on an annual basis to a member of the bench or bar who has demonstrated a significant commitment and made an outstanding contribution to Environmental, Natural Resources or Energy Law in the State of Minnesota.  Jim received his award at the 11th Annual Minnesota Environmental Institute, on Thursday, April 23, 2015.  Please join us in congratulating Jim on this richly deserved honor.

Jon Bloomberg Elected Board Chair of Environmental Initiative

At its February 2015 meeting, the Environmental Initiative Board of Directors elected Jon Bloomberg to a one-year term as Chair. Bloomberg has been a board member since 2010 and has served as Vice-Chair the past two years.
