ELG Major Presenting Sponsor at Environmental Initiative 2017 Awards Banquet

ELG was once again proud to be a Presenting Sponsor at the Environmental Initiative’s Annual Awards ceremony on May 25, 2017.  Each year, the Awards honor innovative projects that have achieved “extraordinary environmental results by harnessing the power of partnerships.”  Seven individuals or groups received awards for their work, while the Environmental Initiative celebrated its own 25th anniversary of bringing together nonprofit, business and government leaders to solve environmental problems.

Bill Hefner Recognized as 2016 MSBA North Star Lawyer

Bill Hefner has been named a 2016 “North Star Lawyer by the Minnesota State Bar Association.  Each year, the MSBA recognizes members who have provided 50 hours or more of pro bono legal services.  Bill provided free legal services last year to two different juvenile clients as a volunteer attorney for the Children’s Law Center of Minnesota.  Staff and volunteer attorneys for the Children’s Law Center provide legal representation to children who are either wards of the state – “legal orphans” – or have been removed from their homes because they need protection. CLC also represents foster children who request help. Bill has been a volunteer CLC attorney since 2004.

Ken Podpeskar Elected to MSBA ENRE Council

ELG partner Ken Podpeskar has been re-elected by his peers in the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Environmental, Natural Resources and Energy Section to once again serve as a member of the Section’s Governing Council.

Ken Podpeskar concentrates his practice on compliance counseling, spill reporting and remediation, Superfund cleanups, property transfers, and solid and hazardous waste issues.

The ENRE Section’s purpose is to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas among Minnesota lawyers active in the practice of environmental, natural resources, and energy law, and to educate members of the Section with respect to current issues in those areas.  The Section’s Governing Council is responsible for developing and implementing the Section’s various educational offerings, internship programs, and initiatives.    Ken’s second two-year term as a Council member will begin in July 2017.

 

ELG a Sponsor of ACC Minnesota’s Fundraiser for the Children’s Law Center

ELG was proud to be a sponsor of the Association of Corporate Counsel – Minnesota Chapter’s “Casino Royale Celebration Gala on April 22, 2017.  All profits from the Gala benefited the Children’s Law Center of Minnesota, whose staff and volunteer attorneys provide legal representation to children who are either wards of the state – “legal orphans” – or have been removed from their homes because they need protection. CLC also represents foster children who request help. ELG attorney Bill Hefner has been a volunteer CLC attorney since 2004.

Jon Bloomberg and Bill Hefner Give Legal Workshop on Administrative Law for Environmental Professionals

ELG attorneys Jon Bloomberg and Bill Hefner once again offered a half-day legal workshop to Air and Waste Management Association—Upper Midwest Section members and the general public on April 5, 2017, at the Wilder Foundation in St. Paul, MN.  At this year’s workshop—entitled “Administrative Law for Environmental Professionals”—Jon and Bill presented on such topics as the legal basis of regulations, the difference between rules and guidance, and key considerations in managing compliance risk.

Greenhouse, Hefner, and Podpeskar to Present at, and ELG to Sponsor, 2016 Midwest Environmental Compliance Conference in Chicago

ELG attorneys Jeremy GreenhouseBill Hefner, and Ken Podpeskar will present at the 2016 Midwest Environmental Compliance Conference to be held in Chicago on November 1-3, 2016.  Jeremy will be co-presenting a talk on Antidegradation: A Practical Guide with Melisa Pollak (Barr). Bill will be moderating a panel discussion on EPA’s five-year strategic plan for environmental justice, featuring EJ. Alan Walts (EPA Region 5) and MPCA Commissioner, John Linc Stine.
